Following its Safety, Environment
and Health Policy, IEN maintains an Environmental Monitoring Program,
a Radioactive Waste Management Program, a Radiological Protection
Plan and an Emergency Plan. Accordingly, the Institute ensures that
the Radiological Protection Service controls the processes involving
radioactive materials.
The environmental dosimetry of gamma
radiation is carried out using thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLD).
For this procedure, 22 TLD detectors, evaluated every three months,
are installed in the grounds of the Institute. The measurements
attest to no environmental impacts due to ionizing radiation.
The effluent gases from the radiopharmaceutical
production process pass through special filters, which are evaluated
by gamma spectrometry to ensure that the atmospheric emissions do
not present radioactive indices higher than the ones recommended
in the norms. The effluent liquids, likewise, are monitored in decaying
tanks, ensuring that the liberated emissions are always within the
recommended levels.
