Due to its peculiar characteristics,
all radioactive material is subject to a rigid control as to its
utilization and subsequent discard. According to CNEN’s definition,
it is considered to be radioactive waste “any material resulting
from human activities, which contains radionuclides in a quantity
superior to the exemption limits specified in the norm CNEN-NE-6.02,
and whose utilization is inappropriate or unforeseen.”
For this reason, all radioactive
material that is considered waste must be collected, treated and
adequately stored in facilities specifically for this purpose. In
the state of Rio de Janeiro, IEN is the only unit of CNEN authorized
to have an intermediate warehouse for low- and medium-activity waste,
providing treatment and storage of radioactive waste with these
characteristics. This warehouse serves, preferably, the states of
Rio de Janeiro and Espirito Santo, and occasionally other states.
The high-activity waste originated in Angra 1 and Angra 2 plants
is stored in the Angra dos Reis Nuclear Center (RJ).
IEN has a team specialized in the
management of radioactive waste, with the objective of guiding the
collection of waste for this unit.
The kinds of waste most frequently
received by IEN and that can be stored in this institute are:
- Out of use radioactive sources
- Compactable solid radioactive
waste with a low level of radiation
- Lightning rods and smoke detectors
- Sealed sources
